Although it’s sometimes hard to believe, Christmas was not always about the presents and pudding! Traditions have been changing throughout the years. While many may miss the “good ol’ days”, others are embracing the modern Christmas. We take a look at some Christmas traditions of the past!
Nearly a hundred years ago now, many of our Christmas traditions we know today were normal in the 1920’s. Christmas trees, wreaths, toys, exchanging presents and more. The stockings however were not the oversized, sometimes personalised, decorations we know today. They were exactly that – your stockings – and were filled with fruits, nuts and sometimes a small toy.
The forties were troublesome for many, with rationing was introduced due to the war. Christmas celebrations were relatively short, and trees were decorated by parents at night to be seen by kids in the morning. The King’s Christmas broadcast would feature on the wireless radio. People made the most of the short holiday season as this was the start of holiday office parties, generally on Christmas Eve
In the 1950’s Christmas traditions were similar to today. Relatives would come to visit, a turkey feast was served followed by Christmas pudding and everyone would gather for the Queen’s speech before playing games. Television Christmas Specials started in the late part of the decade and had many US shows such as Andy Williams but also UK shows such as Tony Hannock and Six Five specials.
Today, although we still hold onto the tradition of family, feasts and parties, Christmas celebrations seem to start earlier and have come with new traditions such as Elf on a Shelf and Advent Calendars that are more than just about chocolate!

The “Ugly Sweater” revolution is here, with Christmas jumpers being the “thing” to wear, especially at holiday parties, to bring the laughs!', '
One thing we all dread at Christmas time is opening a gift to find an ugly jumper, then smiling and thanking your family member, only for it to be stored away in the deepest, darkest corners of your wardrobe, never to be seen again.
But fear not! The “Ugly Sweater” revolution is here, with Christmas jumpers being the “thing” to wear, especially at holiday parties, to bring the laughs!
Sweaters have been a worn garment since the 19th century, being knitted (and often itchy) to obviously stay warm during these cold months. It wasn’t until later in the 20th century that decorated jumpers became a popular thing thanks to television.
Although we know jumpers now to be as bright as possible, sometimes with quotes from our favourite Christmas films such as “Merry Christmas ya filthy animal” (A classic from Home Alone!), there are also more traditional looks, like here as worn by Clark Griswold and Cousin Eddie in the Christmas fill National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, although Clark was getting stick for his choice of sweaters!
It has become such a running joke, that many people hold “Ugly Sweater Day” as a party or even as a fun day in the office. There is often a contest to see who can pull off the oddest one of them all, like in Bridget Jones’ Diary seen here
Christmas jumpers have really evolved throughout the years. Some light up and even play music! There are even jumpers that come with an app so you can place it in a pocket to make it look like a burning fire in a fireplace
Want to get into the action? Fear not! FancyPanda even have some quirky sweaters on offer that will be sure to bring the laughs at your next adult Christmas party. Have a look at our range, as well as other holiday items here

Christmas is nearly here and people are starting to get their decorations out from the loft and dust them off for yet another year. However, instead of that garland that has lost some of its shine or ornaments whose glitter has all dried off, why not get the kids involved into the decorating of the house by making your own easy crafts? Fancy Panda give you a few ideas on how to create a handmade Christmas that will totally reflect you and your family!
We’ll start with an easy one: Paper chains. You can buy pre-cut paper strips that was festive or cut up your own so the kids can glue them with a glue stick (for minimal mess)! You can hang this pretty much anywhere: on your tree, over a door, around a table – anywhere that you fancy!
How about some Christmas scent? It is super easy to gather a few cinnamon sticks and a star anise, and wrap them in some decorative ribbon. Put these around the house or stick them in your tree for a very homely smell of Christmas!
Finally, this snowman door is quick and easy and will give you a smile every time you look at it! Use construction/craft paper to cut out shapes of the face, buttons and nose. Use something like a strip of wrapping paper to make the scarf. It’s so simple to make but the kids will love it!

For those that have no idea about Halloween, then sit back and enjoy as I take you through what Halloween entails. First of all, Halloween is a time of celebration and superstition. It straddles a line between plenty and paucity, fall and winter, and lastly, life and death. It originated from the Samhain’s Celtic Festival, where people used to wear different costumes and light bonfires to ward off roaming ghosts. Halloween is on the eve of an important Catholic Festival, All Saints that takes place on 1st November. It also takes place on the eve of the Pagan Celtic Festival called Samhain. Halloween intertwines the two celebrations between Pagans and Christians. It is hence a good way to show the different superstitions struggling with religious belief.
Through time, Halloween has come to be appreciated and celebrated by more individuals in different countries. Halloween is characterized by fun activities like trick-or-treat, decorations, carving pumpkins, attending costume parties, divination games, visiting haunted attractions, lighting bonfires, apple bobbing and telling scary stories. It has become a very social and commercial celebration and is celebrated by all ages.
Halloween has its own customs and traditions and has a rich culture. One aspect of culture is artifacts and symbols. Let us have a look at some symbols that are used during Halloween. Lanterns are carried on Hallows’ Eve to frighten away evil spirits. Turnips and carved pumpkins are also used to symbolize the harvest period in general. Imagery in terms of skulls, Gothic and horror films and also scary literature is also used. This is used to remind celebrators of death and the transitory quality of human life. Homes are also decorated with pumpkins, scarecrows and corns husks just to bring out themes of evil, death and monsters.
A very important aspect of Halloween is the costumes. Individuals wear different costumes to symbolize different things. Traditional Halloween costumes were inspired by supernatural figures like ghosts, witches, vampires and devils. Modern costumes include popular characters from fiction, generic archetypes and celebrities. Costuming for Halloween started in the 20th Century as the first Halloween costumes were made in the 1930s. Costumes are very important as they symbolize different things. Many people love dressing up as creatures that caused fear and tremble. They see this as a perfect way to poke fun at Satan whose kingdom has been destroyed by our Savior.
